A study of herpesvirus, flavivirus, and coronavirus presence was undertaken on 20 Magnificent Frigatebirds (Fregata magnificens) from the protected Alcatrazes Island, part of the Alcatrazes archipelago in Brazil. The herpesvirus was detected in one adult female (5% prevalence; 95% confidence interval -55 to 155%). In contrast, none of the samples were PCR-positive for flavivirus or coronavirus. While sharing a high degree of similarity with the herpesvirus responsible for annual chick mortality in Magnificent Frigatebirds on Grand Connetable Island, French Guiana, no comparable mortality events have been observed in birds from the Alcatrazes. Our study's results suggest that the virus may have a broad distribution in Magnificent Frigatebirds within the southwestern Atlantic. The observed differences in morbidity and mortality in French Guiana birds may be attributable to basal immunosuppression linked to environmental or nutritional conditions. The Alcatrazes archipelago supports the largest breeding colony of frigatebirds in the southern Atlantic Ocean; it is necessary to explore further, through larger sample sizes in future monitoring studies, the epidemiological significance of identified herpesviruses, and other potential viral agents (e.g., flaviviruses, coronaviruses, and avian influenza virus), for the seabirds of Alcatrazes Island.

Within the boundaries of the coastal Peruvian marine ecosystem, sympatric South American sea lions (Otaria byronia) and Peruvian fur seals (Arctocephalus australis) thrive. A reduction in the available resources has spurred the creation of population health monitoring programs, including the temporal evaluation of blood markers. There are numerous ways to establish a complete white blood cell count, but there's been no research examining the concordance of these methods when applied to pinnipeds. Using archived pinniped data from Punta San Juan, Peru, we investigated the agreement among leukocyte counts measured by the blood film, Leuko-TIC, HemoCue, and UNOPETTE methods. Retrospective leukocyte counts across both species, from 2009 to 2019, were evaluated against prospectively determined blood film estimates by utilizing different analytical techniques. Utilizing Passing-Bablok regression analysis and Bland-Altman plots, the study evaluated the consistency of hematologic counts obtained using various measurement methods, yielding statistically significant results (p < 0.005). The study included 201 A. australis and 94 O. byronia individuals, making up a total of 295 individuals analyzed. Using the blood film estimation method, the highest leukocyte values were observed, demonstrating a statistically powerful difference (P < 0.00001). A considerably larger number of Leuko-TIC counts were observed in comparison to HemoCue counts, yielding a statistically highly significant difference (P < 0.00001). A retrospective analysis of two hundred seven patients, over the age of fifty, suffering from valgus impacted femoral neck fractures, who received at least three large-diameter (greater than 65mm) cancellous screws from 2013 to 2019. Sagittal plane fracture deformity served as an exclusion criterion for patient participation.
The reoperation was the principal outcome.
